Chelsea and Todd Boehly earn seven-figure transfer windfall as World Cup payments confirmed

Chelsea are set to earn $3.05million (£2.47million) for their 12 players involved in this year's FIFA World Cup with the competition reaching its climax on Sunday afternoon.

FIFA will distribute $209million (£169million) as part of its Clubs Benefits Programme, which will see the governing body hand out about $10,000 (£8,100) for each day a club's player has been participating in the international tournament. This includes the week of training and preparation before the World Cup officially started.

Chelsea had a total of 12 players representing their respective countries at this year's competition. Edouard Mendy, Kalidou Koulibaly (both Senegal), Cesar Azpilicueta (Spain), Thiago Silva (Brazil), Denis Zakaria (Switzerland), Mateo Kovacic (Croatia), Kai Havertz (Germany), Hakim Ziyech (Morocco), Christian Pulisic (USA), Conor Gallagher, Raheem Sterling and Mason Mount (all England) all took part in Qatar.

As well as this, the compensation will be paid to all clubs for which the footballer has played in the two years before the World Cup started. So, in Chelsea's case, they will receive a fee for the likes of Antonio Rudiger (Germany), Andreas Christensen (Denmark) and Olivier Giroud (France), who have all participated.

For each player whose country reaches the group stages, clubs can apply to FIFA to be paid £146,000, rising to £178,000 for the last-16, £227,000 for the quarter-finals, £260,000 for the semi-finals and £300,000 for the final.

This means Chelsea are entitled to £146,000 for Havertz's participation with Germany surprisingly being knocked out in the group stage after recording just four points. There were a lot of casualties in the Round of 16.

Pulisic's USA side were beaten by the Netherlands after a brave effort in the last-16. Meanwhile, Mendy and Koulibaly's Senegal team were beaten 3-0 at the hands of England, while Zakaria saw his Switzerland side beaten comprehensively by Portugal. These four players will all hand Chelsea £178,000 – meaning a total of £712,000 will be coming the club's way.

Silva's Brazil side were the victims of a big upset when Croatia beat them on penalties in the quarter-final. Mount, Sterling and Gallagher's England team were beaten at the hands of France in one of the other quarter-final ties. The prize for reaching the quarter-final is £227,000 per player, meaning Chelsea are entitled to £908,000 for their four participants.

Ziyech was part of a brave Morocco team that were beaten 2-0 by France in the week, while his Chelsea teammate Kovacic saw his Croatia side defeated 3-0 to Argentina. The Chelsea duo have earned their club £260,000 each (£520,000 in total).

Manchester City have earned the most from the World Cup with the Premier League champions receiving $5.58million (£4.5million). The earnings from other sides from the English top-flight are as follows: Manchester United – $3.62million (£2.92million), Tottenham – $2.88million (£2.33million), Arsenal – $2.61million (£2.11million) and Liverpool – $1.92million (£1.55million).
