Chelsea able to sell tickets for Champions League clash against Real Madrid and FA Cup semi-final at Wembley

Chelsea fans will be allowed into Wembley for the FA Cup semi-final - and Champions League clash with Real Madrid will no longer be held behind closed doors.

The Government has eased restrictions on the European champions - allowing them to sell tickets again.

Chelsea had been banned from selling tickets as part of the sanctions placed on Roman Abramovich due to his ties to Vladimir Putin.

It meant they faced the prospect of being forced to lock fans out of their much anticipated clash with Real at Stamford Bridge - with supporters also fearing they would not be allowed into Wembley for the FA Cup showdown with Crystal Palace.

But the terms of the special licence that allows Chelsea to continue football operations have been now been changed following lobbying by the club.

Under the changes Chelsea can sell tickets for games away from Stamford Bridge. They can also sell tickets to away fans for their home games.

And, crucially, they can sell tickets for home games played in the Champions League, FA Cup and Women’s Super League.

A Premier League spokesperson said: “The revised licence allows fans to attend Chelsea FC games; Chelsea fans to travel to away Premier League fixtures and Chelsea fans to attend the FA Cup, UEFA Champions League and WSL games.

“The Premier League will receive and hold any revenue from the sale of these tickets that would normally have gone to Chelsea. Chelsea FC have requested and the Premier League agreed that this revenue will be donated to charity to benefit victims of the war in Ukraine.

“The beneficiary charities will be announced in due course after consultation with the club.”

Chelsea will consider the change to the terms a victory - but there will still be concerns regarding revenues, which they claim are crucial to the survival of the club.

There are genuine fears that they will face financial peril if they cannot continue to make money.

However they have been boosted by another alteration, which will allow parent company Fordstam to release £30million to ease immediate cash flow problems.

The Government are also still to increase the £20,000 limit on away travel, which would make the trip to Madrid for the Champions League quarter-final impossible to pay for unless players and staff helped to foot the bill.
