A chef on TikTok has revealed how he saves money while cooking rice, as his hack cuts the cooking time by a third.
At the moment, every small step that you can take to save money is important. Cooking things on the hob can often be cheaper than using other things like the oven, but if you have a big family and cook multiple times a week, the cost can really rack up.
To help people cut down on their bills, @chef_tristan_welch on TikTok shared a cooking hack that slashes the amount of time you're using the hob - and yet still produces perfect results.
His tip has been viewed over 735,000 times, and has racked up over 50,000 likes.
In the video, he shows a packet of rice that says it takes 15 minutes to cook on the hob. Starting the clip off, he said: "Let's save money by not following the instructions. This is energy-saving rice - let's cut the cooking time by one third."
Tristan begins by placing the rice in a bowl, filling it with water and rinsing it out, which you should always do when cooking rice.
However, he says to do this three times, until the water runs completely clear. He says this will remove the starchy dust, which makes the rice sticky.
He continued: "Pop it on the stove and cover with water. Make sure the water is one knuckle above the level of rice. Crank it up to the maximum heat."
When the water starts to boil, bring the heat down to the lowest setting possible and carefully place a tea towel below the pan's lid, tucking it in at the sides, and leave it for 10 minutes.
When the time is up, the result should be "perfectly cooked rice" that's light and fluffy as well.
In the comments, people thanked the chef for his hack and suggested other ways to speed up the rice-cooking process.
"Love this mate!" someone said, while another commented: "Been cooking rice like this for years."
Another person suggested: "Or bring to the boil and turn off heat altogether. Takes a few mins more but doesn't cost any more."
A popular alternative was to use a rice cooker instead, which is a quick and easy way to prepare rice without the effort of checking the pan to prevent sticking.
