Check Back Into ‘The Umbrella Academy: Hotel Oblivion’ With First Look At Deluxe & Library Editions

Dark Horse Comics has poked around in Afterspace and returned from the void beyond the ever-expanding cosmos with two hardcover editions of The Umbrella Academy: Hotel Oblivion.

The third installment of the hit comic series by writer Gerard Way and artist Gabriel Bá, Hotel Oblivion Issues #1-7 are getting the deluxe and library edition treatments in September. Even if you’ve been trapped in a purgatory-esque resort established by Sir Reginald Hargeeves (aka “The Monocle”) for the last two decades, you’ll want to check out these super-sized collections.

Just like Dark Horse did for Volumes 1 (Apocalypse Suite) and 2 (Dallas), the Deluxe Edition for Volume 3 will be “packaged in a slip-case hardcover featuring the Umbrella icon with the neon ‘hotel’ treatment, and new slipcase art by Gabriel Bá,” reads the official announcement.

Aside from all seven issues of the story arc, you’ll also get an expanded sketchbook section as well as “a brand-new portfolio and print” drawn by Bá. At 240 pages, it’ll run you $79.99 a pop.

The Library Edition also comes with a larger sketchbook section and some commentary from the comic’s two creators. Also containing 240 pages, it’ll cost you $39.99 a pop.

Following the events of Dallas, Hotel Oblivion finds the dysfunctional Hargreeves children dealing with a mass breakout of villains that their father had imprisoned at the titular hotel in an Afterspace pocket dimension.

With Spaceboy and Diego embarking on an interstellar/inter-dimensional adventure in the Minerva with the eccentric Doctor Zoo and The Monocle’s trusty manservant, Abhijat (he’s back after all these years!), Bá gets to indulge in a trippy tribute to the ‘60s-era art styles of iconic illustrators like Doctor Strange’s Steve Ditko.

Meanwhile, Number Five and The Rumor dabble in some corporate espionage; Klaus struggles with drug abuse and a Satan-worshipping biker gang; and Vanya (aka “The White Violin”) attempts to regain the use of her legs as she comes to terms with the fact that she had superpowers during all the years Sir Reginald kept her out of sight and out of the fight.

All of it culminates in the arrival of a strange new crime-fighting team of heroes that could render The Umbrella Academy totally obsolete.

The deluxe and library editions of The Umbrella Academy: Hotel Oblivion go on sale Tuesday, Sep. 29. They can be pre-ordered on Amazon here and here. Retailers such as Barnes & Noble, Things From Another World, and your local comic shop will carry them as well.
