Cheapest supermarket petrol prices compared from Tesco to Asda and Morrisons

The cost of filling up a family car crashed through the £100 barrier today in further cost of living misery for households.

It now costs £100.27 to fill up a 55-litre vehicle, according to latest RAC figures. For diesel, the same figure is £103.43.

The average cost of a litre of petrol has risen to another new record of 182.31p - up by 1.5p compared to 180.73p from the previous day.

The price of diesel has gone from an average of 186.57p to 188.05.

It is always best to avoid motorway stations if you can, as some are already charging £2 per litre - with experts predicting this could become the norm nationwide by summer.

Supermarket petrol prices compared

The Mirror used the comparison website PetrolPrices.com to look at the cheapest supermarket pump prices in different locations across the UK.

PetrolPrices.com is free to sign up to and lets you compare prices based on your postcode, up to a 20 mile radius.

To start, you need to enter your postcode. You can then tailor your results to look at specific supermarkets of fuel stations, and if you're looking for petrol or diesel.

Here is how prices varied between the Big Four supermarkets, so from Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Tesco.

These are based on the cheapest prices we found for each store.

Asda fuel prices

Asda unleaded prices were lowest in Birmingham at 172.0p, rising to 176.7p in Brighton when we checked today.

For diesel, the cheapest prices were between 181.7p in Cornwall and 183.7p in Brighton.

The Mirror has asked Asda for its average fuel prices and we'll update this article when we get a response.

Morrisons fuel prices

If you shop at Morrisons, we found the cheapest prices for petrol at its forecourts ranged from 173.3p in Manchester to 176.7p in Newcastle.

Diesel prices ranged from 181.7p in Manchester and Newcastle to 182.7p in Cornwall.

Morrisons told The Mirror that its average price is 177.4p for unleaded petrol and 183.6 for diesel, which is more expensive than the cheapest prices we've highlighted above.

Sainsbury’s fuel prices

Sainsbury’s unleaded prices were as low as 170.9p in Norwich, rising to 174.9p in Preston when we checked today.

For diesel, the cheapest prices were between 183.9p in Newcastle to 187.9p in Ashford.

Sainsbury's wasn't able to give us an average figure for what it charges for fuel today, but said it varies depending on location and they "always aim to be competitive".

Tesco fuel prices

The cheapest Tesco prices we spotted across the towns and cities we checked varied from 169.8p in Birmingham to 180.9p in Ashford.

For diesel, the prices were as low as 179.9p in Whitehaven to 189.9p in Newcastle.

The Mirror has asked Tesco for its average fuel prices and we'll update this article when we get a response.
