House prices have climbed in recent years making it more and more difficult to find an affordable home. With the average house price in Greater Manchester now £257,437 according to Rightmove, this makes buying a property particularly tough for first-time buyers and low income households.
Despite house prices soaring in most areas, there are certain parts of the region where you can still find a bargain home. In the boroughs of Bolton, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Tameside and Wigan, there are properties on the market for much less than the average house price.
Here we look at the cheapest areas to buy a house in Greater Manchester where the average house price is less than £200,000.

Bolton
As one of the region's more affordable boroughs, there are several areas in Bolton where you are likely to find a cheap home.
The cheapest place is the town of Farnworth which has an average house price of £161,402.
This is followed by Heaton, Blackrod, Kearsley and Little Lever where the average cost of a property ranges from £187,000 to £195,000.
Manchester
The Manchester borough has several areas with average house prices that are less than £200,000.
The cheapest area to buy a home at the moment is Harpurhey, with an average price of £136,253.
Newton Heath, Openshaw and Gorton are the next most affordable areas to live, followed by Moston, Moss Side, Longsight and Belle Vue.
Oldham
There are three areas in Oldham where you are likely to find a bargain home.
The cheapest part of the borough is Hollinwood, with an average house price of £159,429.
House prices are also cheap in Lees and Chadderton, ranging from £187,000 to £195,000.
Rochdale
Although often considered a more expensive borough, there are still cheaper places to live in Rochdale.
The most affordable area to buy a home in Castleton, where properties typically sell for around £174,683.
The next cheapest areas are Milnrow and Newhey, with average house prices of around £192,000.
Salford
There are just two areas in Salford that are considered affordable with house prices much lower than the average.
Little Hulton is the cheapest part of the borough, with an average price of £170,754, followed by Salford Quays where the average cost of a property is £188,044.
Tameside
Ashton-under-Lyne is the cheapest and only area in Tameside where property prices are below the average.
The average house price in the market town is £188,776 making it a much more affordable choice for househunters.
Wigan
The cheapest borough to buy a home is Wigan, and there are a bunch of areas here where you can expect to find bargain homes.
The most affordable area is Ince with an average house price of just £130,758.
Homes are priced much less than the average in Platt Bridge, Pemberton, Ashton-in-Makerfield and Abram, where prices range between £152,000 and £170,000.
Average house prices in Leigh, Atherton, Aspull and Orrell are between £175,000 and £192,000.
