Cheap as chips! - UK fish and chip shop selling tea for just 45p

A new chip shop in one part of the UK is offering customers fish and chips for just 45p on its opening day. Alas, the restaurant is not in the North East.

The Mother Hubbard’s shop is opening in Erdington, Birmingham, on Saturday (June 26). The chain’s first store opened in Bradford in May 1972 - and in its 50th year, it is repeating the opening day prices of just 45p for the first 1,000 customers.

The new venue uses Icelandic haddock and British potatoes for its chips. It also sells a range of other fish options, including fiery or spicy fish and chips, grilled fish and fish or chip butties, reports Birmingham Live.

The menu also includes favourites like pies and pasties, fish cakes, sausage and battered sausage as well as mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy. The opening day 45p offer will mean customers will make a £8.30 saving on the regular £8.75 price for fish and chips.

Manager Chris Thornton said: “It’s taken us six months to open this site. The 45p offer is rolling back the price to what fish and chips were in 1972 and will be available for the first 1,000 customers."

He went on to say the opening offer was "a big step" and staff were expecting "a major queue".
