ChatGPT appeared to out Elon Musk's interest in the US Agency for International Development (USAID) after the AI chatbot responded to a TikTok user, saying that USAID was "designed to ensure" elections are "free and fair."
In a video shared to TikTok by @TheRebelAlchemist, the user said they decided to ask ChatGPT questions about what would happen if it turned out that there had been election interference or falsified results in the last election.
After providing some responses about Congress being able to investigate or the courts could look into it, @TheRebelAlchemist said that ChatGPT then asked them if they would like to hear more about "recent legal precedents" on the issue.
@therebelalchemist Why USAID, you ask? I think chatGPT might have hooked me up with the answer to that question. Please repost!! @theempresscjj @Raw Cognizance @HopelessJudas 🇺🇸 @katethesarge22 @Gretchen’s Got Questions ✨ @Eggrolltime @sandracoltonmedici #usaid #teamblue #fyp

The user said they responded "yes please" to this prompt, which led to ChatGPT writing up some new answers, the first of which was attributed to "usaid.gov."
"I've been wondering why Elon Musk is interested in usaid.gov," the user said. "So given that it gave me information from usaid.gov regarding cybercrimes and elections, I prompted and said, 'What does USAID, what does this department have to do with elections?'"
The chatbot responded by saying that USAID promotes and supports "democratic elections worldwide," adding that the agency works to ensure that "electoral processes are free, fair, and reflective of the will of the people."
ChatGPT went on to explain that USAID "provides technical assistance" to ensure that local and national election authorities "conduct transparent and efficient elections," promotes "fair competition," increases voter education and empowerment, works to combat "misinformation and disinformation" that could undermine election integrity and bolsters "electoral justice."
The user was especially surprised by the final point the chatbot made, which said that USAID supports judicial processes to ensure that there are "avenues for redress in instances of electoral fraud or malpractice."

USAID has been the recent target of Musk and the Trump administration after the Tesla CEO said on X that President Donald Trump had "agreed we should shut it down."
The announcement drew intense backlash from Democratic lawmakers, with many urging Republicans to see the warning signs and to stop Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Recent reports of Musk's and DOGE's employees accessing Treasury payment systems and data has also sparked anger from users online, with many taunting and spamming Musk as a way to show their disagreement. Meanwhile, others have turned to in-person protests outside the Office of Personnel Management.
