Charting the history of Scotland's ancient towns

SCOTLAND has a fascinating history – and our ancient towns are right at the heart of the nation's story.

That's why our Back In The Day writer, Hamish MacPherson, embarked on a new series charting these tales and unknown pasts after years of research.

They've proven a hit with readers and now we're bringing them all together in one place so you can find them easier.

MacPherson told us: "I first got the idea for this series on a trip to Irvine when a local friend claimed the former royal burgh had once been capital of Scotland.

"A little research showed that he was partly correct, and that made me wonder how many of our ancient towns had similar unknown pasts.

"Some more research convinced me that I should tell their stories as part of my self-declared project to encourage more Scots to discover this country’s rich heritage and history.  I’m glad people are finding it interesting.

"Irvine, by the way, will be the last column in the series."
