Charnwood man to face court after driving straight at police

A 23-year-old Charnwood man will face court after allegedly driving his car straight at police who were trying to stop him.

Early on Monday afternoon, officers spotted a Subaru station wagon that wasn't registered. They said the gold-coloured vehicle was on Hindmarsh Drive, Weston.

A short time later, they tried to stop the vehicle in Phillip to check its rego but the man took off in the vehicle into Altree Circuit.

"Police situated their vehicle on Botany Street, aware that this road is a loop with only one exit," ACT Policing said.

"In order to evade police, the 23-year-old drove directly at the police vehicle and travelled along the passenger side, almost hitting police.

"The Subaru then drove onto the roundabout on Botany Street, causing several vehicles to stop to avoid being struck by the man."

Fifteen minutes later, the police got a triple-zero call reporting the vehicle stolen. The caller said he was at his place of work in Gunghalin, according to the police.

"Despite the man claiming to be in Gungahlin, police tracked the origin of the call to be in Weston," the police said.

"Officers located the man a short time later in Weston as a passenger in another vehicle, and the gold Subaru was found at a residence in Phillip."

The man has been charged with failing to stop for police, dangerous driving, driving while his licence was suspended, using an unregistered vehicle, using an uninsured vehicle, and making a vexatious call to emergency services.
