Charlton seek fourth new manager in just over a year after sacking Michael Appleton

Charlton are searching for their fourth manager in 13 months after they sacked Michael Appleton just 30 minutes after their 3-2 defeat to Northampton on Wednesday.

The Addicks are four points above the League One relegation zone after a dismal run of 12 games without a win.

Former Southampton manager Nathan Jones quickly emerged as an early contender for the Charlton job.

Appleton only succeeded Dean Holden in September and leaves after winning just eight of his 28 games in charge.

"Charlton Athletic can confirm that Michael Appleton has left the club with immediate effect after being relieved of his role as head coach," said Charlton in a short statement.

Appleton’s departure means the turbulence at the Valley continues.

SE7 Partners, headed by former Sunderland director Charlie Methven, took over Charlton in July from Danish-American businessman Thomas Sandgaard.

They brought in Appleton to turn their fortunes around but the Addicks are under real threat from relegation.

Former Charlton striker Jason Euell is understood to be one of those interested in taking over at the Valley.

Euell was most recently part of Nigel Pearson’s backroom team at Bristol City and is keen to take the step into management.

He previously spent nine years coaching in the Charlton academy, helping bring through the likes of Ademola Lookman and Ezri Konsa, before leaving in 2022.

Charlton have confirmed Curtis Fleming will take charge on an interim basis. He will be assisted by former captain Jason Pearce.
