Charlie Nicholas is talking Rangers transfers nonsense and it’s Celtic who need serious cash spent – Hotline

Charlie Nicholas' assessment Rangers need around six signings to overhaul Celtic for next season’s title sparked debate.

Hotline callers are ready for the transfer window and the recruitment of the Glasgow pair is a hot topic.

Elsewhere, talk of amalgamation and golf took hold with a fleeting mention for Scotland’s game against Ireland on Saturday night in the Nations League.

Robert Livingstone, Palm Beach, said: “Charlie Nicholas was a fairly decent player, but as a pundit he’s way off the mark. Every man and his dog knows what Rangers badly need.

“It’s not six new players, but a big strong goalscoring centreforward alongside Alfredo Morelos to double their goal numbers instead of having to keep relying on James Tavernier. Basically their defence and midfield is sound with the addition of John Souttar.”

Henry Moffat, Stirling, said: “Ange Postecoglou must press for serious cash to be spent this year.

“There is enough money in the accounts from last year to buy Jota and Cameron Carter Vickers twice over before Champions League money is added.

“We are in the strongest financial position in our history and are already champions, so let's have our strongest ever window.”

Chris Lowe, Yoker, isn’t having the recently-named SPFL Team of the Season as he said: “It is a scream.

“Tom Rogic, who only played 19 league games, who’s that good he’s getting let go for free and Kyogo, who again only played 15 games.

“I think the Hooped glasses were on when the selections were getting made.”

Talk from Stephen Johnstone, Ardentinny, on Thursday’s Hotline of teams amalgamating brought correspondence as Michael Shaddick, Edinburgh, said: “So he thinks clubs should amalgamate? Would this include Rangers and Celtic, Hearts and Hibs?

“No, we need more homegrown players in Scotland, not highly paid players with no talent.”

Michael Bain, Leith , added: “One of your readers suggested that Scottish clubs should amalgamate. That makes sense, but when does common sense and supporting a team go together?

“I have supported Hibs for more than 70 years, but I would have no interest in supporting an amalgamated team, I think most Hearts supporters would be the same. Wallace Mercer tried it years ago and see how that ended.”

Meanwhile, Stephen was back in touch about golf as he had his say on the controversial LIV golf series which has split the game apart.

He said: “Golf fans are teed-off by certain golfers jumping ship to join the Saudi backed series leaving a sour taste within the PGA. Well all these guys are doing is like footballers are doing. Chasing the money. And if the rich want to pay them obscene amounts of money for their services, they will go. Would you not jump ship for the millions reported? Like Maurice Johnstone got for joining Rangers many moons ago?”

But George Faigrieve, Edinburgh , countered: “A few years ago, I admired Phil Mickelson for his decision to opt out of one of the Majors to attend his daughter’s graduation.

“Now I see him as just another money chaser who, already worth around $300 million, has joined the LIV Tour for one thing only, more money. Shame on him and his cohorts.”

In case you missed it, Scotland have a game in the Aviva Stadium tonight and Willie Ross, Bellshill, said: “Good luck to the boys. Keep up the good work from the Armenia win. Ireland are rubbish.”
