It was a Saturday to forget for Dundee United defender Charlie Mulgrew. Not only did his side lose 2-0 to Sunderland at Tannadice, the 36-year-old scored one of the most bizarre own goals you will see.
Mulgrew played a blind back pass from near the centre circle but didn’t see his keeper wasn’t covering the goal. This lead to Carljohan Eriksson being unable to recover as the ball rolled into the net. Fans took to social media to express their disbelief at the former Celtic star's error. Some put blame on Eriksson being so far off his line while others piled on Mulgrew for a lack of awareness.
Jack Ross ' men were without new recruits Dylan Levitt and Steven Fletcher and found themselves second best for the majority of the game against the Black Cats. However summer signing Craig Sibbald started for the Tangerines, as did 16-year-old striker Rory MacLeod.
United kick off their Scottish Premiership campaign away to Kilmarnock in two weeks time. They also are set to discover their Europa Conference League third qualifying round opponents when the draw is made on Monday.
