Charlie Hedges says she won't feel 'guilt' for returning to work weeks after giving birth

Radio 1 DJ Charlie Hedges has been praised by other mums for talking about 'mum guilt' after returning to work seven weeks after giving birth.

The radio presenter returned to her show Rickie, Melvin and Charlie on Monday for the first time since going on maternity leave.

She gave birth to daughter Summer-Rose on August 13.

Charlie talked about her decision to return to work so quickly, saying she always planned for her parents to help with care.

She told her co-hosts: "I grew up with my nanna, and for me, that time is just... you can't get that time back, so for me to know that she's at home with my mum and dad now, that makes me feel a bit teary.

"I know that I'm so lucky to say that I absolutely love my job, so for me to come into work and to switch off for a couple of hours, I knew it was good for me."

The star has opened up about 'mum guilt' in an Instagram post and was supported by other parents in her position.

She wrote: "When I left this morning, I also told myself one thing....I will not allow myself to feel guilty for going back week seven and I really hope you kick yourself today if you feel guilty about going back to work.

"Please tell yourself this is all for our children, but also importantly for YOU! And to all of you, parent or not....you do you, whatever that means in life, because that is enough!"

Charlie got a great response from fellow mums as they praised her for talking about the subject.

One person wrote: "I went back at week six and I felt all those things too. I am so happy you had a good day and for me, it just doubled how very precious my time with my baby was, so I think both he and I got the best out of each other."

As a second added: "I went back at six weeks. It was tough but my son, now 24, is very confident, sociable, and a lovely young man."

Another working mum said: "I went back when my daughter was eight weeks old - I missed work and loved being back and have never felt bad about it! It's all for her and despite many, many people's opinions about being back so early, it suited us and worked out well! Enjoy it!"

One follower wrote: "I wish I'd seen this post eight years ago! I went back when my baby was 10 weeks (after starting my leave two weeks before birth) and everyone had an opinion, I felt so guilty! She's my little best mate now and knows mamma worked hard to provide for her and her sister!"
