Charlie Cresswell insists ‘horrible’ Millwall can secure promotion to Premier League

Charlie Cresswell believes Millwall can win promotion to the Premier League in the near future, after laughing off the fact that “everyone says Millwall is a horrible place to go.”

The Leeds centre-back is currently away with the England U21s in Georgia, where they get their European Championships campaign under way on Thursday against the Czech Republic.

Cresswell spent this season on loan at Millwall, and the Preston-born 20-year-old believes it is a club on the up.

“I loved every minute of my time at Millwall”, Cresswell said. “The fans, players and staff really made my time there. I wouldn’t change a second of it. There were ups and downs, but I was glad to come to the end of the season on such a high, individually.”

Millwall were in a play-off spot for the majority of the season but missed out by a point on the final day after losing 4-3 to Blackburn Rovers at the Den, who were pipped to a top-six finish themselves on goal difference.

Cresswell reflected: “It was a shame we couldn’t make the play-offs because we were in there all season, but it’s something that I can take into my future and my experience going forward.”

Asked whether Millwall can push for promotion in the not-too-distance future, Cresswell said: “Everyone says Millwall is a horrible place to go. The Championship looks tough this year. I’m sure not many teams will want to go to Millwall, and if they keep that attitude and keep performing the way they did last season, I’m sure they can always go one ahead.

“But the Championship is so unpredictable — you don’t know what’s going to happen. I wish them all the best, and who knows?”
