Charlie Bird to donate €3m to charity this week as he thanks public in health update

Charlie Bird has revealed he'll donate a massive €3 million to charity this week after raising the amount during the 'Climb with Charlie' initiative.

Earlier this year, the former RTE journalist (along with thousands of others) scaled Croagh Patrick in Mayo to raise funds for the Irish Motor Neurone's Association and Pieta House.

Charlie, who was diagnosed with incurable motor neurone disease towards the end of 2021, was overwhelmed by the amount of support he has gotten since telling the world about his diagnosis.

Taking to Twitter, Charlie explained why it was such a "big week" for him as it was time to hand over the money raised.

He wrote: "Good news this is a big week for everyone who supported climbwithcharlie. We will be handing over two cheques for well over ONE AND A HALF MILLION Euros EACH to the two charities."

Charlie also gave a brief update on his health while thanking the people who were involved with his journey.

" I wish I could hug everyone of you. You have all helped me so much in this dark period of my life." he added.

Earlier this month, Charlie told the Irish Mirror that he was hopeful of seeing Christmas, despite his health struggles.

He told us: “I am struggling with my health.

“As you know my voice is gone and now my swallow is affecting me dreadfully. But I am now battling each day now and it is plain and simple living each day as it comes.”

Charlie added: “If my health is OK, I will continue extending the hand of friendship and what I mean by that is I will see if there is any other way Climb with Charlie can help people.

“I have lots of thoughts in my head. But I will take a month or two off to try and build my strength and cope with my terminal illness.”
