Charlie Bird thanks Bank of Ireland staff after he became distressed in branch

Charlie Bird has thanked Bank of Ireland staff for coming to his aid after he became distressed in one of their branches.

The veteran broadcaster and journalist has spoken about his experience with uncontrollable crying in the past, a common symptom amongst those living with Motor Neurone Disease. He previously discussed a similar episode that occurred while he was shopping in Dunnes Stores.

Charlie took to Twitter to share details about the recent incident, which lasted for about half an hour. The 73-year-old thanked Bank of Ireland staff members for their compassionate approach towards him.

He wrote: "I just want to thank the two female staff members in the Bank of Ireland branch in Wicklow this morning who helped me with a problem I had. I cried uncontrollably for almost a half an hour with them."

He admitted that his condition was taking a toll on him and that it was becoming more difficult to control the sporadic crying. His Tweet did not go unnoticed by Bank of Ireland, who left a sympathetic reply underneath.

Bank of Ireland wrote: "Hi Charlie. Thanks for your tweet and we appreciate your kind feedback. We will pass this on to our colleagues in the Wicklow branch. Take care."

Charlie first went public with his Motor Neurone Disease diagnosis in late 2021. The RTE broadcaster has since raised almost €3 million through his Climb with Charlie initiative, with proceeds donated to both Pieta House and the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.
