Charlie Bird says he will light candle for people of Ukraine during Croagh Patrick climb

Charlie Bird has said that he will light a candle for the people of Ukraine during his climb of Croagh Patrick next month.

The much-loved journalist has captured the hearts of the country over the past few months as he opened up about his struggle with Motor Neurone disease.

Climb With Charlie will take place on Saturday, April 2 when Charlie will ascend Croagh Patrick to raise funds for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and Pieta House.

Because of Covid, the event cannot facilitate large numbers at the one location, so Charlie is encouraging people around the country to complete their own climb or walk in their local area.

Today, Charlie announced that those affected by the Russian invasion of Ukraine will be in his thoughts while he tackles the mountain.

He tweeted: "Climbwithcharlie is not political in any way.

"But when I climb Croagh Patrick I want to light a fifth candle for the people of Ukraine.

"Climbwithcharlie is all about solidarity and extending the hand of friendship. Thanks you all so much for your amazing support."

People were blown away by the journalist's kindness and compassion.

One person said: "You’re wonderful Charlie. What a beautiful idea."

Another wrote: "We are with you all the way Charlie."

A third person said: "What a great idea. Lovely thought."
