Charli XCX's clever use of dead space creates an ultra-cozy reading nook – and it's a top trend for 2025

Bay windows are a beautiful architectural feature, but how they are set back can too easily create 'dead' or unusable space. In Charli XCX's home, she subverts this pitfall with a stunning window seat.

The Brat Singer's reading nook idea is cozy and inviting. It starts with built-in blue drawers layered with a long plaid cushion covering the surface. Blue and red throw pillows create a welcomingly textured surface. Built-in bookshelves reach for the ceiling on either side of the bench. On the left, Charli has arranged plants and a lamp in an unexpected pop of red shade. The right side has four rows of shelves filled with books. Everything you need for a wonderful afternoon of reading is contained right in this small space.

If you love this look, you're in luck, it's becoming a popular interior design trend for 2025. Sarah Ross, co-founder at Addison Ross explains: 'As we look to 2025, we predict deep, earthy tones will continue to rise in fashion off the back of the burgundy trend of 2024. These hues will be mirrored within interiors due to the warm and grounded atmosphere they promote, that we all crave within our homes. On a similar line, cosy reading nooks will become highly sought-after spaces, as people look to unwind after the chaos of the festive season and embrace the calm of the new year. These nooks will rise with specific attention to layered lighting schemes created with LED portable lamps and candles.'

To recreate Charli's window seat idea, start by choosing a color scheme. Part of what makes the scheme so beautiful is the way the cushions and throw blankets correspond with the blue walls of the home. A pop of red in the corner also makes the look significantly more interesting. It's also essential that the items in the room look carefully selected over time, rather than all chosen at once. This eclectic ambiance is what makes the space feel inviting and cozy.

2025 will be all about nesting in your home, and clever use of dead space is a great place to start. If you follow Charli XCX's example, you'll have a perfect reading nook in no time.
