Charles Manson's chilling explanation of swastika tattoo on his forehead

Photos and mugshots of cult leader Charles Manson were shared around the world as we discovered horrifying details of his shocking crimes.

His face is instantly recognisable, largely thanks to the disturbing swastika tattoo in between his eyebrows.

And the story behind the disgusting facial design is just as chilling and upsetting as you would expect.

In 1970 Manson was brought in front of a court charged with seven murders, including that of heavily- pregnant  actress Sharon Tate - the wife of movie director Roman Polanski - and celebrity hairstylist Jay Sebring.

He believed the killings would start a race war.

When he arrived at court, Manson had an 'X' on his face between his eyebrows. He etched it into his face in the same spot every day.

The young murderers who followed him copied the design on their own faces during the hearings as they sat giggling throughout the proceedings.

Later in the trial he arrived at court with a full swastika tattooed on his lower forehead.

When asked about the tattoo, his response was chilling.

He said: "The mark on my head simulates the dead head black stamp of rejection, anti-church, falling cross, devil sign, death, terror, fear."

Manson was sentenced to death, along with three of his followers, after being found guilty of orchestrating the multiple killings.

A fifth defendant, Charles "Tex" Watson, was later convicted and handed the same sentence.

However, they were all spared execution after the death penalty was abolished in California in 1972 following a US Supreme Court ruling.

Manson  died in prison in 2017 aged 83 after falling gravely ill in prison.

The California Department of Corrections released a statement reading, "Inmate Charles Manson, 83, died of natural causes at 8.13pm on Sunday, November 19, 2017, at a Kern County hospital."

He was serving nine life sentences at the time after ordering his followers to carry out the horrific killings in 1969.
