Charity cycle raises thousands for Down Syndrome support group

A charity cycle in Co Fermanagh on Sunday has raised thousands for the local Down Syndrome support group.

Starting off from the Round O in Enniskillen , 152 cyclists took part in the event, which will see more than £2,000 go towards taking local children with Down Syndrome out on day trips.

The main route took the cyclists from the town out to Kesh and Belleek before making the trip back to Enniskillen.

One of the support group’s members Brian Haughey, said the day could not have gone any better.

“It was a brilliant day, we couldn’t have asked for better,” Brian told MyFermanagh.

“Everything just worked out really well in terms of the weather and the fact it was the first cycle since the whole pandemic.

“It was the first time for many people to get out for a bit of freedom after the last couple of year were cancelled.

“Everybody was on a great high, just enjoying the day.

“We raised over £2,000 and the money will be used to take the kids out to events that they love.”

Keen cyclist Brian’s daughter Grainne has Down Syndrome and he added it was great to see the event go from strength to strength.

“I’m a parent and my daughter Grainne has Down Syndrome and both myself and my wife are in the local support group.

“I’ve been cycling for five or six years myself as well and we got the support of a few other local cycling clubs.

“Other parents also got involved and did their bit to help out on the day.

“It was brilliant to see the response from the local community.

“I think it was definitely the best day we had in the five years of running the event, and it’s an organisation that people here love to support.”
