Charity box, cigarettes and alcohol stolen in 'terrifying' armed robbery in East Belfast

Two shop workers were left shaken after a "terrifying" armed robbery in East Belfast on Monday night.

Police are appealing for information following the incident at a commercial premises on the Beersbridge Road.

It was reported to police that at approximately 8.30pm, two men entered the premises.

The first man produced a knife and demanded money while the second male then emptied cigarettes into a holdall.

A staff member was then forced into the back office by the first male who demanded the safe was opened before he removed a sum of cash.

A charity box, a large quantity of cigarettes and some bottles of alcohol were taken before both men made off on foot.

PSNI Detective Sergeant Duffield said: "Both men are described as around 5ft 10ins and were wearing black clothing and black face masks.

"The first man is of thin build, while the second is described as having a more stocky build.

"Both staff members, whilst physically unharmed, were left shaken by what was obviously a terrifying experience for them.

"Our enquiries into this incident are continuing, and we are appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time and has any information, or who saw two males matching these descriptions, to call detectives on 101 quoting reference number 1704 of 17/01/22.

"Alternatively, information can be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous."

DUP Titanic councillor George Dorrian said he was saddened to see another local business in East Belfast targeted by criminals, without thought for staff or the local community.

"These are people who were doing a night's work but end up being terrorised and threatened with a knife," he told Belfast Live.

"It is just mean and nasty and for a charity box to have been among the items stolen, makes you wonder what kind of people were behind this attack. It's totally reprehensible and anyone with any information should contact the PSNI."

Alliance Councillor Michelle Kelly added: "I utterly condemn this incident and my thoughts are with the staff members who have undergone a horrific, frightening experience. I would urge anyone with anyone with any information to contact the PSNI."
