Charging mistake could be destroying your iPhone battery - and your case is to blame

Phone batteries are often a sore spot for iPhone users, with a common complaint that the battery life is poor compared to other devices. This is because batteries deteriorate over time and need replacing, although many opt for a new handset at this point.

While the battery will naturally hold less charge over time, meaning your Apple device will need more frequent top ups and using certain apps will drain it more, the way you use it could be making things worse.

Things like constantly topping up the charge, watching videos while charging and using chargers with too high of a voltage can all lower the iPhone battery's life span.

Another surprising way you can damage the battery life is simply by charging with the case on, according to David Eluemunoh who is a popular tech TikToker.

In his viral video, seen by over 1.6 million on TikTok, David said: "Stop charging your iPhone with a case. Did you know charging your iPhone in certain styles of cases make it get hot?

"That is mainly why your iPhone stops charging when it gets to 80% because it's hot."

David explains that the phone overheating might be the reason your battery health deteriorates so quickly, a warning which is echoed by Apple on its website.

The site reads: "Charging your device when it’s inside certain styles of cases may generate excess heat, which can affect battery capacity. If you notice that your device gets hot when you charge it, take it out of its case first."

David claimed that this is why iPhones stop charging at 80%, but iPhones with good battery health will automatically use optimised charging, pausing at this percentage. This is so your phone isn't charging constantly throughout the night, it will continue charging in the morning around 2am to suit your routine.

Apple have a handy battery health indicator in the settings, under the battery section, which can indicate the actual percentage charge when your phone says it is fully charged - the lower the percentage, the less time your phone will stay on for.

Usually, when the battery health hits around 85% that is when you will notice needing to charge twice a day or your phone not lasting as long. Below 80% you may want to look into a battery replacement, which is a good way to extend your iPhone's life without purchasing a whole new unit.

If your battery is getting hot often, seemingly without reason, then you may want to get the phone checked as it could indicate the battery is swelling. If the phone appears to bend on the back or opens at the side without being damaged, the battery may be swollen and you should take it be repaired immediately as it could explode.

Viewers were shocked at David's charging revelation, admitting to never taking their case off and one comment added: "Me watching this while charging my phone with case on it."
