Police have charged a 53-year-old man after another man was allegedly shot in the back in northeast NSW.

Emergency services were called to Warral Road in West Tamworth at 3am on Sunday and found the victim injured.

He was taken to a local hospital in a stable condition as detectives set up a crime scene.

About seven hours later, a 53-year-old man was arrested leaving a home on the same road, police said.

Police charged the man on Sunday night with two offences - shoot at with intent to murder and possess shortened firearm (not pistol) without authority.

He was refused bail and is set to appear at Tamworth Local Court on Monday.
