Quentin Johnston has his first touchdown of the season.
On second down, Justin Herbert spun out of a sack and made an acrobatic throw towards tight end Eric Tomlinson. The ball made it into Tomlinson’s hands before being knocked out and was initially ruled a catch and fumble, recovered by Carolina. After review, the play was ruled an incompletion, giving the Chargers a third and 10.
Herbert took a shot play to Johnston in one-on-one coverage with Panthers cornerback Jaycee Horn on a sideline go ball. Johnston reached down to catch the ball coming low to the inside, scoring from 29 yards out to open the scoring on Sunday.
It was Johnston’s second catch of the game after taking a screen for three yards on the first play of the contest.
Cameron Dicker missed the following extra point, the first time he has missed an extra point in his career. With the miss, the Chargers took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter.
