The Chargers’ offense should be among the best in the AFC this year, and their receiving corps is shaping up to be one of the top units in the league.
Veteran Mike Williams will play a major role for the team in that regard, and head coach Brandon Staley told reporters about the importance of having the seasoned pass catcher in the mix as the Chargers look to compete for their first playoff win since 2018.
“It’s just been special,” Staley said of having Williams at practice. “Mike [Williams] means so much to our team. He’s one of the top players I’ve ever coached. I believe that he’s one of the top players in the NFL. He’s such a big part of what we do and how we do it. He’s had a fantastic two days out there and he’s ready to have a great training camp.”
Williams sustained a back injury in Week 18 last season that kept him out of the Wild Card loss to the Jaguars. He was also limited by an ankle injury late in the season.
Williams finished the regular season with 63 catches for 895 yards and four touchdowns on 93 targets over 13 appearances. He broke out with his second 1,000-yard season in 2021 and posted a career-high nine scores.
As the Chargers prepare to rest ahead of training camp and the preseason, fans can rest assured that Williams and the rest of Los Angeles’ receivers will be ready to hit the ground running when they gear up for the upcoming season in July.
With Williams, Keenan Allen, and rookie Quentin Johnston to throw passes to, quarterback Justin Herbert is in an enviable position, to say the least.
