Chappell Roan Clarifies Stance On US Election After Backlash For Endorsing Neither Candidate

Donald Trump, Chappell Roan and Kamala Harris

Chappell Roan has clarified her stance on the 2024 US presidential election, after copping backlash for refusing to endorse either candidate.

ICYMI, the pop star revealed in an interview with The Guardian last week why she hasn’t yet endorsed presidential nominee Kamala Harris or her opponent, the Taylor Swift hater Donald Trump

“I have so many issues with our government in every way,” Roan told The Guardian when asked whether she would announce an endorsement.

“There are so many things that I would want to change. So I don’t feel pressured to endorse someone. There’s problems on both sides.”

Roan went on to encourage people to use “critical thinking skills” when voting, and named trans rights as a particularly important election issue since “they cannot have cis people making decisions for trans people, period.” Period is right, Ms. Roan.

The comments were taken out of context with the same brevity it took me to learn the “HOT TO GO!” dance, with fans promptly criticising the singer for her apolitical stance and assuming it meant she supports Trump.

Our 2024 bingo card is already filled with surprising entries (Katy Perry copping strays from The Greens?), but a proud queer artist who is “knee deep in the passenger seat” deciding to vote for Trump would truly shock us all.

Thankfully, Roan has since cleared up her comments on the election and confirmed she isn’t voting for Trump (phew!).

“There is nuance to what I say in interviews,” Roan said in a TikTok video posted on Wednesday. “I think it’s important that people use critical thinking.”

Roan said her comments about the importance of learning who to vote for were “taken completely out of context”, and clarified that her broader message was about the need “to question authority and question world leaders.”

“This is not lip service, this is not virtue signalling”, Roan added, “actions speak louder than an endorsement.”

The singer went on to recite the full quote she gave in The Guardian profile (which, as a side note, could be an alternative intro for “Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl”), before confirming that “no, I’m not voting for Trump.”

“I will always question those in power and those making decisions over other people”, she added, “I’m sorry you fell for the clickbait.”

Unlike Swift — who threw her support behind Harris earlier this month — Roan stopped short of officially endorsing the Democratic nominee, but we should’ve known given her ability to admonish angry men that she was never in the Trump camp.

It’s a “Femininomenon”, after all!
