Chaos at Switch Island as traffic light control box 'destroyed' in crash

Traffic is queuing at Switch Island as the control box is not working.

On Saturday, May 7, a car 'destroyed' the control box on the Switch Island A59 junction with the M57 and M58. The crash caused traffic lights in the area to stop working.

Travel disruption is now expected at the junction as full repairs are not expected to take place until Friday, May 13 or Saturday, May 14, at the earliest, according to Inrix. Merseyside Fire and Rescue service warned drivers to expect significant delays and stated that the lights may be out of order for some time.

A spokesperson tweeted: "Safety warning. We have been advised that all traffic control lights at switch island junction in Sefton are not currently working and may be out of action for some time- please be very careful in this area and expect significant delays."

Cars are now queuing at the junction, with traffic building to Maghull, Brooms Cross Road and the M58 with queues back to J1 Kirkby. Travel monitoring Inrix is reporting that lane closures are now in place and turning restrictions to try and keep traffic flowing.

One person said that traffic to Kirkby was backed up to the M58 roundabout.
