Ahead of the Assembly elections 2022, the politics surrounding the Enforcement Directorate (ED) raids on Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi’s relative is gaining momentum and is set to become a key electoral issue.
Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Friday said he has sought permission from party central leadership to sue Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal for defaming him in connection with the recent raids by the Enforcement Directorate in the State.
Accusing Mr. Kejriwal of crossing limits of decency, Mr. Channi said that terming him dishonest and posting his picture on social media with currency notes, which were not even recovered from him amounts to defamation, which is not acceptable.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said that Mr. Channi has been aiming for the pity of the people by presenting himself as poor and Dalit after being exposed by ED raids. “Congress party leaders have targeted the poor and SC community. This section has always been used for its vote bank. They only use this community and the names of people like Baba Saheb for their political gain. But whenever Congress and Congress leaders are accused of their nefarious activities, they suddenly remember SC community and the same is being followed by Channi, who is trying to take refuge in the name of the community,” he said.
Leader of Opposition and AAP MLA from Dirba, Harpal Singh Cheema said that the Congress party had appointed Mr. Channi as the Chief Minister of Punjab for a few days to get the votes of the SC community. “They did nothing for the welfare of this section. Instead, Congress swindled millions of rupees that belonged to the students of the SC community. The Congress government had not provided bicycles to the school children in the last five years, had not provided uniforms and books to the students on time, discontinued the construction and subsidy of toilets and houses and stopped giving pulses under the Atta-Dal scheme. Even the educated youth of SC community was not given jobs according to their qualifications,” he alleged.
