Channel 5's The Holiday drives viewers crazy as death twist and frantic scenes cause confusion

*THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS*

Channel 5 viewers were left shaken and at odds to fathom what was going on as The Holiday's third episode ended with a grim discovery on Thursday night.

After plenty of hype and even more teaser adverts, the thriller, based on the book of the same name by T.M Logan, launched on Tuesday night, with Jill Halfpenny leading The Holiday cast.

Jill's latest TV character Kate is a detective and devoted mum, who is determined to relax and unwind on a holiday to Malta with her family to reunite with old friends from university.

However, things quickly take a turn for Kate, when she finds texts on husband Sean's phone, strongly suggesting he's having an affair with one of her friends on the holiday.

As Kate desperately tries to find out what's going on and who's betraying her, she fails to notice that daughter Lucy is growing close to Jake, the troubled son of friend Jennie.

The very start of The Holiday 's first episode began with a flash forward to Kate frantically making her way through smoke in marshland and, on Thursday night, Channel 5 viewers finally saw those scenes play out as Kate, Sean and others frantically tried to find youngsters Daniel, Odette, Lucy and Jake after spotting a fire.

The end of episode 2 saw Kate clutching a knife as she followed friend Izzie into woodland and in the closing moments of Thursday's episode, she was seen staring down at Izzie's lifeless body as blood stained the cliff below her.

As credits rolled at the end, viewers flooded Twitter with their opinions. One blasted: "Trying to watch The Holiday on Channel 5 but it's f**king impossible to work out what's going on. There's far too many secrets. I wish I hadn't started it the other day cos now I'm f**king committed."

A second reacted: "The Holiday on channel 5 is so confusing. Why is everyone crying and not saying WHY?" with another perplexed viewer, tweeting: "Dunno whats worse- the characters, the filming or the acting ! This fire/smoke scene is most ridiculous thing yet!"

There are plenty of people enjoying The Holiday, with one fan commenting: "The holiday on channel 5 on was so great to watch and night after instead of week after was a bonus. Unexpected twists and turns. We'll done all," and another posting: "I’m enjoying The Holiday on Channel 5. I’m particularly impressed with @laramcdonnell1 - I haven’t seen her before but a young actress I’m sure who’ll go far.."
