Channel 5's Dan Walker knocked 'out cold' by horrifying cycling crash as he issues Twitter update

Dan Walker has revealed he was 'out cold' after being hit by a car while cycling on Monday, saying the first thing he remembered was waking up on the road with police and paramedics around him.

The former BBC Breakfast host turned Channel 5 news anchor startled his Twitter followers when he uploaded a photo of himself in the back of an ambulance with a bloodied and bruised face and wrote: "Bit of an accident this morning. Glad to be alive after getting hit by a car on my bike. Face is a mess but I don’t think anything is broken. Thanks to Shaun and Jamie for sorting me out and the lovely copper at the scene."

Dan was hit by a car while on his way to catch a train in Sheffield and elaborating on how much worse things could have been, he later added: "It happened in Sheffield on the way to the train station. I think I got hit by a car but was out cold for about 20 minutes. I have no memory of it."

Declaring that the helmet he was wearing saved his life, ex Football Focus presenter Dan told his fans: "The helmet I was wearing saved my life today so - if you’re on a bike - get one on your head. Smashed my watch & phone, ruined my trousers, my bike is a mess but I’m still her."

As messages of support flooded in for him, Dan issued another update, saying he was 'eating soap through a straw'

One of his followers responded: "I can’t comprehend why a cyclist wouldn’t wear a helmet and yet I see so many not wearing one on busy roads. Glad that you are safe and well" with another replying: "Looking at your pics I’d say you had a lucky escape Dan, no cyclist deserves this - ever!"
