Channel 4's A Place in the Sun host shares hospital update after gory holiday injury

TV presenter Ben Hillman has shared an update from hospital after getting injured while holidaying in France.

Earlier this month, the Channel 4 A Place in the Sun host took to Instagram to share he had badly broken his thumb on the first day of his family getaway. Posting a snap with a bandaged hand and a plate of hospital food in front of him, he wrote: “Not the French cuisine I had in mind for the 1st day of our family holiday!”

Revealing what he had done, Ben continued: “Managed to acquire an open fracture/dislocation on the water slide. For those not in the know that means the bone was sticking out the skin.

“Word to the wise, don’t forget your travel insurance this summer. Have fun out there guys. Hats off to the French healthcare/emergency services.”

Over the bank holiday weekend, Ben gave fans an update on his injury and shared he'd had a metal rod taken out of his thumb, reports the Mirror. Posting a snap from Worthing hospital, the married dad-of-two wrote: “4 weeks on from the accident and the metal rod is coming out.”

He also shared a ‘re-enactment’ video of the squeamish moment it was removed which he captioned #theyrebigpliers #diysurgery. After it was done, Ben joked: “Thank you # NHS. And I didn’t even get a sticker for bravery.”

Comparing his injured thumb to the one on his other hand, he added: “It’s going to take some time to get it moving again. My thumb seems to have grown.”

When he was first injured, his A Place in the Sun’s co-stars and other famous friends were quick to wish him a speedy recovery. Jasmine Harman wrote: “Oh no!!!” followed by a sad face emoji, while Laura Hamilton commented: “Hope you are okay” with tear emojis.

Scarlett Douglas posted: “Noooo, get better soon xx” and Lee Juggernauth said: “Oh mate... hope you feel better soon.” Astrologer Russell Grant added: “Oh no Ben – sending healing vibes.”

And it seems the healing vibes worked as Ben was still able to enjoy the rest of his holiday with wife Gabby and daughters, Hope and Honour. On the last day of their two-week holiday, he shared more pics with his family and wrote: “Oh what fun we had!!!

“Despite the obvious setback of spending the first night in hospital we had the most amazing family holiday in Brittany and the Dordogne.” He added: “We will be returning asap, even found our ideal holiday home spot so I better get saving!”
