Channel 4's A Place in the Sun fans in disbelief as couple pass up 'dream' home

A Place in the Sun host Danni Menzies had her work cut out for her on Thursday's instalment of the Channel 4 show.

Colin and Janet were looking for a home to spend their retirement together in the sunshine on Portugal's Eastern Algarve. With a budget of £350,000, they wanted somewhere with plenty of outdoor space and a golf course nearby.

With a considerable budget, they were shown a number of sprawling homes, but things didn't get off to a great start. Janet felt the four-bedroom house, in São Brás de Alportel, needed too much work doing to it.

Property number two had a huge five bedrooms, with an acre of land, private swimming pool, roof-top terrace and a sauna. It was on the market for just over £412,000 - but Janet and Colin said they could afford £400,000 at a push, and Danni said the agent said there was plenty of "wiggle room".

Viewers at home were smitten with the house, but Janet wasn't best pleased with the "traffic noise". After some persuasion, the couple did say it was a "contender" but they didn't seem convinced.

Taking to Twitter, Samantha said: "Wow!! Property 2! Looks more like the lotto house!". Jessica said: "How are they not loving property 2? It's a dream".

Tina said: "The noise? It's hardly the M25!", while Beckie Miller said: "Beautiful pool area". Marion said: "If they don't put an offer in on number 2 they're mad".

Colin and Janet found they were more taken with the third property, a refurbished farmhouse in Moncarapacho. It had four bedrooms and its own pool and gardens.

After totting up the work that needed doing and the expense, they said it "wouldn't be fair" to put in an offer just yet. Days later, however, they changed their minds and bagged the home after contacting the agent themselves.

A Place in the Sun continues weekdays at 4pm on Channel 4 and All 4
