The iconic Derry Girls mural has received a 'temporary' update ahead of the finale series of the sitcom starting on Channel 4 next week. The street art, which shows the five teenagers in their school uniforms, was first painted back in 2019 by UV Arts to promote the second series and has now had a revamp fit for series three.
Broadcaster Channel 4 announced the news on Twitter on April 7 posting a picture of the makeover with the caption: "The #DerryGirls mural has had a temporary update! Series 3 lands on your screens Tuesday 12th at 9.15pm". The street art is on the side of Badger's Bar and Restaurant in Derry, Northern Ireland.
The sitcom follows a teenage friendship group - played by Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Louisa Harland, Nicola Coughlan, Jamie-Lee O'Donnell and Dylan Llewellyn - growing up in the 90s during The Troubles in Northern Ireland. In the latest mural update, Derry Girl Michelle Mallon played by Jamie-Lee O'Donnell has switched from her usual peace pose with two fingers and can be seen holding up three fingers - hinting at the third series release.
Fans of the sitcom were delighted with the latest makeover to mark the final series and share their excitement for the new episodes. Calvin tweeted: "Can NOT wait!!! Avoided the trailers for maximum laughs". "So exited for this !!!" Rachie added.
Earlier this week it was also announced that the Derry Girls were going to feature on the front page of a one-off special edition of Smash Hits - which published its last issue in 2006 - to promote the return of the comedy.
Derry Girls returns to Channel 4 for the third and final series on Tuesday, April 12 from 9.15pm.
