Channel 4 Gogglebox's Giles haunted by 'dirty' detail while wife Mary sobs over Queen

Gogglebox star Giles has been haunted by what fans have said is a 'disgusting' detail during his latest appearance on screens. He was back alongside his wife Mary as the cast reacted to new of the Queen's death.

The hit Channel 4 show was back on screens on Friday night (September 16) for the second time since Queen Elizabeth II's death was announced. The show's favourite families sat and watched as Huw Edwards told the country of the Queen's passing, aged 96 at Balmoral, on BBC News.

As they watched the unfolding news coverage, Mary shared her upset, saying: "We don't have a role model now," before clarifying to her husband she meant a female role model. Later, while listening to King Charles II's first speech as monarch, Mary burst into tears as Giles told her: "Steady," and grabbed hold of her hand.

But prior to the emotional scenes, Gogglebox viewers were distracted by a "dirty" detail in Giles and Mary's home as he appeared out of his usual chair before appearing in a black tie and shirt while Mary too dressed in black, presumably in a nod to the Queen's death and the national period of mourning which then ensued.

@ohhollygosh tweeted: "@channel4 please stump up a few extra quid for Giles to buy a new chair #Gogglebox." @JSapier commented: "#Gogglebox That chair could do with a good clean Giles." @TV_Mark2015 remarked: "#Gogglebox That chair's as dirty as sin."

And it's not the first time Giles' chair has come into question. Back in March 2021, Gogglebox viewers were concerned as Giles was missing from the start of the show with just Mary sat in her usual spot. That was just because her husband was out of shot, tinkling the ivories as Mary praised his piano playing.

But that isn't what REALLY distracted viewers. It was in fact Giles' blue chair which he is more often than not seen occupying throughout the programme. "Genuinely conerned that the next global pandemic might be started by Giles' armchair," tweeted one viewer alongside a snap of the chair. Another said: "You need to plunge your chair into soapy water Giles #gogglebox."
