Channel 4 Derry Girls shares release date for third and final season of popular show

A release date for season three of Derry Girls has been revealed by Channel 4, as the long wait for the return of the Our Lady Immaculate gang draws closer.

Channel 4 bosses have confirmed that Derry Girls will return for its third and final season on April 12, just under two weeks away from now.

Erin's (Saoirse-Monica Jackson) posse are set to return to their original roles, with Nicola Coughlan as Erin, Louisa Harland as Orla, Jamie-Lee O'Donnell as Michelle and Dylan Llewellyn as James.

However, Nicola Coughlan revealed recently that she will be appearing in a 'reduced' role setting, due to scheduling clashes with her other filming commitments.

Nicola is also known around the world for her role as Penelope Featherington in the hit Netflix show, which recently premiered its second series, but filming commitments for the popular period drama series meant it was hard for her to return to Derry Girls in the same way as before.

Speaking recently, Nicola said: "Last year was really difficult. I won't lie because, you know, at the best of times trying to manage different projects, it's such a push and pull. We were meant to film Derry Girls in January 2021.

"And I was totally free and they decided to push it again. And that caused me insane stress because I was on what in the industry is called first call. So it means you have to go and do the show that you're on first call to, which was Bridgerton. And I was like 'Guys, can we just film it?'

"And they were like, 'No, we're gonna wait.' And I was like, 'oh', so we had to make compromises happen in the script of Derry Girls. It was devastating to me because I wanted to be in all of this."

Despite the stress and pressure of filming two popular shows, Nicola will appear in the final series of Derry Girls in a slightly smaller role.

You can look forward to the return of the Derry gang now, as Channel 4 will begin airing the final season of the show from April 12 onwards.
