We may only be two episodes into this year's series of The Great British Bake Off but fans are fully invested in the new batch of bakers - and the themes. Week one started off strong with 'Cake Week' but viewers had to say a sad farewell to Will who became the first baker to be eliminated from the competition.
But the show must go on and the remaining eleven amateur bakers on the hit Channel 4 show were tasked with another signature, technical and showstopper challenge centred around biscuits.
The contestants were first challenged to create 12 identical macarons that were disguised to look like something other than the familiar French biscuits. The contestants opted for a wide range of macaron disguises, with Carole and Sandro opting to make biscuit burgers, Janusz choosing watermelon shapes and Maxy going for daisies.
There was even a savoury option when Syabira decided to make chicken satay macarons using tofu, ginger and peanut satay. Then, in the technical challenge, the bakers made 12 Garibaldi biscuits, with feathered chocolate decoration, which saw Dame Prue warning them: "Don’t get creative."
The technical was won by Northern Irish master’s student Rebs, with James and Sandro coming second and third respectively. But her luck did not last, with the biscuit base of her showstopper mask breaking in the oven before assembly in the final challenge. The contestants were tasked with creating 3D biscuit masks, with several bakers opting for various elaborate designs.
And disaster also struck for Carole in the showstopper, when her mask cracked and caved in, minutes before the end of the challenge. But the latest set of challenges did throw up questions among Bake Off viewers as they flocked to social media over two main issues they spotting during the show.
The first saw them question whether macaroons belonged in 'Biscuit Week'. @Megmac1987 asked: "Is a macaron a biscuit?!" @milesoffsidepod joked: "Most googled thing in UK today. Is a macaron a biscuit?" @SamanthaJoMason posted: "Are you p****d @Channel4 since when has a Macaron been a biscuit?!!!"
And the technical challenge didn't get off lightly either as fans were left seriously unimpressed by a change to the classic Garibaldi biscuit. @Ariadne_Reviews tweeted: "We're all about to send Prue Leith to jail for making them put chocolate on a Garibaldi biscuit. Is this the united nation we've been promised all week? #gbbo #BakeOff."
@hello_selo said: "Chocolate? On a Garibaldi??? I'm calling Ofcom. This is an outrage #bakeoff #GBBO." @LawAspi wrote: "Watching #bakeoff and that is NOT. Garibaldi biscuit! @PrueLeith." @OwenWintersgill posted: "Who would ruin Garibaldi biscuits by putting chocolate on them? #bakeoff."
Meanwhile, it was Libyan-born Maisam, 18, from Greater Manchester, was eliminated after failing to impress judges Paul Hollywood and Dame Prue Leith with her Venetian mask showstopper or her carrot-shaped signature biscuits. And the result caused upset among Bake Off viewers.
@diaryofgoose said: "WHAT!!! JUSTICE FOR MAISAM #GBBO." @mikrogalaxies wrote: "MAISAM WAS ROBBED! #GBBO." @jadesdelicate fumed: "HOW WAS MAISAM THE ONE WHO LEFT??? OVER OTHERS WHO WERE WORSE??? #GBBO." @grace_is_sugoi cried: "Not Maisam. Wrong decision imo #GBBO."
