Channel 4 alternative Christmas speech will be given by a robot after King Charles' debut

Channel 4's alternative Christmas message this year will come from an AI-generated robot that will discuss the highs and lows of 2022.

The robot, called Ameca, is one of the most advanced robots and will also be able to respond to questions. Ameca was developed in Britain by Engineered Arts.

She is expected to say that all of us should be "neither happy nor sad" about the previous twelve months. She will describe 2022 as "a learning opportunity, a chance to change the way we think about the world and a reminder to help those in need whenever we can".

The broadcast will run after King Charles' first royal festive address at 3pm on Christmas Day.

Ameca's address will be entirely AI-generated, with nothing scripted or written by a human. In her message, she is also expected to deliver some light-hearted humour as she tells viewers that they "always find something to laugh about".

Ameca will deliver some festive cheer too, as she will remind us that if we are ever feeling down, we should remember we have "the superpower to bring a little bit of joy into the world".

Channel 4 ’s chief content officer, Ian Katz, said: "As we look to a future in which Artificial Intelligence is set to have an increasingly prominent role in our lives, Ameca’s Alternative Christmas Message is a vivid illustration of both the power and limitations of this technology.

"Despite Ameca’s remarkably lifelike facial expressions, I suspect most viewers will come away reassured that humans are not about to be displaced by AI robots any time soon."

The robot address will follow after King Charles makes his first Christmas Day message following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September.

The broadcast has been recorded already, before the second half of the tell-all Netflix documentary from Prince Harry and Meghan aired.

Channel 4’s Alternative Christmas Message will air on Christmas Day at 5.25pm on Channel 4 and All 4.
