Channel 4 A Place in the Sun fans confused as couple hunt for home on island they've never visited before

Fans of A Place in the Sun were perplexed after a couple travelled to a sunny island in search of a home despite never having been there before.

Thursday's episode showed property expert Jean Johansson on hand to help Jeanette and Phil find a new home. The couple dreamed of starting a new, relaxed way of life in the ancient city of Chania, West Crete.

With a budget of £170,000 they hoped for a three-bedroom detached house with a pool. But while saying what they hoped for in a property, the couple admitted they had never been to Crete.

Jeanette said: "This is our first time here but we're absolutely in awe." Jean asked: "Tell me what is it about Greece that you love?"

The buyer explained the lifestyle and food was right up their alleyway. Phil added: "Everything about Greece, we just love it."

They explained they chose Crete as it is one of the largest of the Greek islands. They hoped to set up an already existing business on the island too.

But fans saw this as a red flag and claimed the house hunters only wanted a "free holiday". On Twitter, Johnny said: "Warning: messers. Free holiday. Never visited Crete before."

Dickie said: "The hallmarks of time wasting. Never been there. No idea what they want. Constantly changing wish list #aplaceinthesun."

Another user said: "Well we decided not to put an offer in just yet we will come back later mind you thanks for the holiday. #aplaceinthesun." Ruth said: "Another freebie holiday to an island they've never been to but want to move lock, stop and smoking barrel to #aplaceinthesun."

The couple proved to be fussy, with the slightest thing putting them off "perfect" properties. They were shown five homes which met most of their needs but they still didn't seem happy.

However, the buyers decide to put in an offer on one property - way under the asking price of £162,037 at £135,000. The seller rejected the offer so they decided to up it by £2,000 but that was rejected too.

Jeanette said they were due to fly out to the island again in four weeks time so they would look again then. In the meantime, no further offers were made.
