Channel 4 A Place in the Sun couple go on house hunt for 'mysterious' buyer

House hunters on today's A Place in the Sun went on a search for a property mainly for a "mysterious" buyer who wasn't seen on the show.

Channel 4's Laura Hamilton was on hand to help house hunters Gill and Paul find a dream property in Benalmadena on Spain’s Costa Del Sol. The couple, both teachers from Derbyshire, hoped to find somewhere sunny to escape to in the winter months - something which had been a dream of Gill's for the past 30 years.

With a budget of £110,000, the property expert showed them around five homes catering to their needs of a one bedroom apartment with room for a sofa bed. They also hoped for a balcony and didn't mind if somewhere needed a bit of work doing to it.

But there was one other person the buyers felt they needed to think about when buying a home - their 26-year-old son Ben. Gill explained he was currently living in the area and would be looking after the property while they are in the UK.

The first property their viewed was a one-bed apartment in Torrequebrada which was on the market for £99,145. Laura asked what they thought of it as Gill said: "For us it's fine. Don't know for Ben if he was living here full time." She added: "He's just got a massive double bed."

Paul said: "He's 6ft six. So he might find the legroom in here quite challenging."

Ahead of the second property, Laura showed the couple the nearby beach as she said: "How do you think Ben would feel about this?" Paul replied: "He's used to it."

The third property was more fitting for the parents and Ben as it actually had two bedrooms. Again Paul wondered if a bed big enough for Ben would fit in either of the rooms but they decided that the size of the apartment would be "difficult to beat". As the buyers continued looking around the property Laura said in a voiceover: "I can see it especially for Ben and his partner, who will be living in it full time."

Gill went on to explain she had been taking photos of each of the properties and sending them to their son. Paul explained: "Primarily it's still our choice, our decision, but obviously we're trying to keep Ben in mind as well."

The final two properties shown were a three-bed apartment in Fuengirola on the market for £100,855 and a two-bed apartment in Benalmadena on sale for £104,274. However, the fourth apartment wasn't "their vibe" and the final one just wasn't doing it for them either. One thing that didn't change on the search was how much consideration they gave towards Ben.

Viewers on Twitter were mystified as to why their son hadn't been included on the search despite being mentioned so much as they dubbed him "mysterious". The fans all shared the same questions.

Lynn said: "Do we see the mysterious Ben in this episode? #aplaceinthesun" Another user said: "They won't be making any offers.. not without Ben! #aplaceinthesun."

A third user added: "If Ben's going to be living there full-time (apart from the few weeks they pop over) why isn't he part of the show #aplaceinthesun." Fran said: "‘Keep Ben in mind’ ? He’s not stopped talking about him #aplaceinthesun."

When it came to making a decision, Paul and Gill put in an offer for the second property. After their offer was rejected initially, the couple's counter-offer was finally accepted.
