Changes to The Cornerhouse and new gym amongst major plans for Nottingham

A wide-range of projects were applied for and given the go-ahead last week in Nottingham. There were a variety of plans submitted to Nottingham City Council that made progress in the week ending May 6.

The two most significant were the approval of the next step of a city centre restaurant's and the greenlight given for a new gym to finish setting up near Nottingham train station. Elsewhere, plans to create an outdoor classroom at a hospital were given the go-ahead.

And, at two other sites, planning permission was given for lights neighbours thought were too bright at a cash and carry and for showmen to remain at a site in Basford.

Makeover of Cornerhouse eatery

On May 3, permission was given for the makeover of a city centre restaurant to continue. The Slug and Lettuce at the Cornerhouse will now be able to display illuminated hanging signs.

Their website says: "We are currently closed for a makeover but, don't worry, we'll be back looking better than ever on 12th May!" The Cornerhouse is currently undergoing a lot of change, with the Mixologist and Wingstop soon to move in to empty units at the complex.

New Gym near train station given go ahead

Planning permission has been granted for illuminated 'TRIB3' signs to be put inside and at the entrance of a new gym in Carrington Street, just down from the new Broadmarsh Car Park. Staff from the new gym said they will open in early May, with state-of-the-art facilities and playlists created by a DJ.

They have previously said the gym's changing rooms will be filled with toiletries and lavender scented face towels, with gym-goers able to use a shake bar and lounge. It will replace the B.SPOKE cycle studio which shut in 2021 after opening in 2019.

A spokesperson said: "TRIB3 is one of the most exciting workouts on the market, offering an incredible workout experience as well as post-workout shakes in a dedicated lounge area." The chain has gyms in Sheffield and Leeds, as well as abroad in China, Finland and Spain.

Construction of an outdoor classroom at Highbury Hospital

On May 6, the council gave the go ahead for an outdoor classroom to be built at a hospital. Planning documents say the community Garden at Highbury Hospital has been developed by volunteers and staff to provide a space where patients and staff can undertake therapeutic activities.

To further the current offering within the garden it is proposed to construct an outdoor classroom space within the garden. According to the developers, this will allow the garden to be used during the winter months and during periods of adverse weather.

As part of the development it is proposed to install a pathway from the existing entrance path to the bottom of the garden, where the proposed classroom will be located. Additionally this pathway will open access to more of garden to more patients.

Planning approval has been previously granted for a similar building on the same site. However, the scheme had to be redesigned due to budgetary restraints.

Cash and carry signs allowed to stay despite neighbour concerns

On May 5, signs which neighbours complained were too bright were allowed to remain at a cash and carry. The lights at the Nottingham Bazaar Cash and Carry in Hucknall Road were criticised by neighbours in planning objections.

A planning report said local resident complaints over the brightness being excessive were raised with the agent/applicant and Environmental Health officials have also been involved. The agent has advised that the illumination level of the signs has now been reduced.
