CHANDIGARH: For the first time, a woman doctor from PGI, Prof Meenu Singh has been selected for the post of executive director at an institute of national importance - AIIMS Rishikesh.
The appointments committee of the cabinet headed by the PM approved the proposal of the Union ministry of health and family welfare for selection of the executive directors at seven different AIIMS--Rishikesh, Bhopal, Bhuneshwar, Patna, Guwahati, Awantipora and Darbhanga. The search-cum-selection committee shortlisted the names in January.
The executive directors shall serve for a period of three years or till they attain the age of 70 years from the date of appointment on contract or deputation. Prof Meenu will superannuate from PGI next year. The age of retirement here is 65 years.
In the other six AIIMS, selected faculty are from AIIMS Delhi, AIIMS Jodhpur, AIIMS Bhubneshwar, JIPMER Puducherry and King George Medical university, Lucknow.
Prof Meenu had been nominated earlier for the post of director, PGIMER. She was trained as a pediatric pulmonologist at the Children’s Hospital, University of Pittsburgh, US in 1994-95. Since then, she consistently worked in India in the field of paediatric pulmonology at the Advanced Pediatrics Centre, PGI.
Prof Meenu also heads the telemedicine centre at PGI using technology developed by ISRO. She is also in-charge of the Regional Resource Centre and National Knowledge Network at PGI and has developed a wide ranging tele-education network of medical colleges.
“Telemedicine shall be my first priority to be developed in the institute. This digital mission has been the dream of the PM,” said Prof Meenu.
