Championship supercomputer predicts 2022-23 title winners, play-offs and relegation

Freshly-relegated Burnley are the favourites to finish top of the Championship next season.

That's according to Reach's in-house supercomputer which, after crunching the numbers and running the necessary algorithms, predicts that 2022-23 will be the Clarets' year.

The Lancashire outfit, relegated from the Premier League on the final day of last season, have been given a 36 per cent chance of finishing on top in the second tier next term. That is more than double the chance of any of their 23 rivals.

Burnley are entering a new era with Vincent Kompany installed as Sean Dyche's permanent successor earlier this summer. A clutch of high-profile players have departed in recent weeks but Kompany has already set about building a new side.

The likes of Scott Twine, Josh Cullen and CJ Egan-Riley have already been added with further new arrivals expected at Turf Moor before the transfer window shuts in September.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the next favourites to win promotion to the top flight are Burnley's fellow relegated sides: Norwich and Watford. They each have been handed a 15 per cent chance rating of finishing top. Sheffield United, meanwhile, are rated at 12 per cent to win the division.

With second place also guaranteeing promotion, clubs are really just as happy to finish as runners-up. Burnley have a 56 per cent chance of finishing in the top two.

Norwich have a 31 per cent chance of making the top two, Watford 30 per cent, Sheffield United 25 per cent, Huddersfield 13 per cent, Preston 10 per cent and Luton eight per cent.

When it comes to the play-offs, Norwich and Watford have both been given a 40 per cent probability rating. Sheffield United have a 38 per cent chance of finishing between 3rd and 6th. Burnley have a 33 per cent chance, Huddersfield 32 per cent, Preston 29 per cent and Luton 27 per cent.

Three clubs have been given an 18 per cent chance of making the play-offs - West Brom, Coventry and Millwall respectively.

Blackburn and Middlesbrough have both been given a 17 per cent chance of finishing inside the top six, while QPR and Stoke are further back on 16 per cent. In terms of relegation, Sunderland are the favourites to go down to League One.

The Black Cats won promotion via the play-offs last term but are rated as 65 per cent of going straight back to the third tier. Bristol City have a 53 per cent chance of joining them, Birmingham 48 per cent, Reading 39 per cent and Wigan 19 per cent.
