Championship, League One and Two permutations as title, promotion and relegation at stake

Tuesday is set to be a busy and potentially eventful night in the English Football League (EFL).

There are 10 games set to take place across all three divisions - and permutations aplenty at both ends of the table. So far a clutch of outcomes have already been determined. Fulham have clinched promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

At the other end of the table the three teams that will be exiting the Championship in the other direction have also been rubber-stamped with two games left to play. Peterborough were relegated last Saturday and will join Derby County and Barnsley in the third tier in 2022-23.

Tuesday sees the Cottagers in action against fourth-placed Nottingham Forest. There is a chance Marco Silva's can seal the Championship title.

For that to happen they need to better Bournemouth's result. The Cherries are on the road at Swansea City. If that finishes in an away win then Fulham will not be celebrating clinching top spot despite their vastly superior goal difference.

Should Forest win at Craven Cottage they would move third, and if Bournemouth lose they could be within two points of Scott Parker's side - with the two teams still to face each other on May 3. Whatever happens on Tuesday Bournemouth cannot mathematically be promoted.

Tuesday could be a potentially decisive night in League One also. Wigan Athletic can clinch a place in the Championship if they avoid defeat against Portsmouth at Fratton Park. A point is all Leam Richardson's men need to ensure they cannot be caught by third-placed MK Dons. Should they achieve it, it would mean a return to the second tier after two years away following their controversial relegation in 2020.

The Latics were handed a 12-point handicap at the end of the season for entering administration. In 2020-21 they survived relegation into League Two by a solitary point before a summer rebuild aided their transformation into promotion contenders this time around.

Tuesday also sees second-placed Rotherham in action. They go to Sunderland in a pivotal game for both. A win for the Millers would take them three clear of MK with a better goal difference and means they would need just a point on the final day to pip them.

As for Sunderland, a victory would move them onto 83 points heading into the final day of the season - although they would need a substantial goal swing to go in their favour and for Rotherham and MK to both lose.

Sheffield Wednesday travel to Fleetwood in another compelling clash in the third tier on Tuesday. The Owls will move back into the play-off spots if they avoid defeat. A win would potentially take them fourth.

As for Fleetwood, they are fifth-bottom and a point against Wednesday would relegate both AFC Wimbledon and Doncaster. The pair are three points behind but both with vastly inferior goal differences. Should Fleetwood get all three points they would also effectively send Gillingham down as they would be three points clear and with at least a goal difference that is 16 goals better off.

In League Two four games take place. One of them sees Exeter City host Barrow. A win for the Grecians will confirm promotion into the third tier. Forest Green, who clinched their elevation at the weekend, travel to Swindon although even a win and an Exeter defeat wouldn't be enough to seal the title just yet. Swindon are down in tenth and a win could move them into the play-offs. That though depends on what Mansfield and Sutton both do.

They are both at home, to Stevenage and Crawley respectively, knowing wins will further enhance their top-seven chances.
