The 2024 Challow Hurdle runners are taking shape ahead of the big Newbury Grade One on Saturday 28th December – with a big head-to-head between the unbeaten pair – Regent’s Stroll and The New Lion.
Challow Hurdle Runners Headed By Two Unbeaten Horses At Newbury
The Jonjo O’Neill-trained Bill Joyce, who impressed at Sandown last time out, is certainly no back number and the yard have won this three times this century.
However, the bulk of the Challow Hurdle market with the best horse racing betting sites in the UK will be with Regent’s Stroll for Paul Nicholls and Dan Skelton’s The New Lion.
Both have big reputations and come here unbeaten, plus the pair caught the eye with separate wins here at Newbury in their last races.
The New Lion is 2-from-2 over hurdles and impressed many with an easy 3 length win at Newbury at the end of November.
While a day earlier at the same track Regent’s Stroll, who is part-owned by Sir Alex Ferguson, survived a blunder to win on his hurdles debut – beating Good And Clever by 9 1/2 lengths (watch below).
Trainer Paul Nicholls Has Won The Challow Hurdle Six Times – More Than Any Other Trainer
No other handler has won the Challow Hurdle more times than Paul Nicholls – the Ditcheat man has mopped up this prize six times.
The first of those wins came back in 2003 with Cornish Rebel, while his most recent was only 12 months ago with Captain Teague in 2023.
In fact, Paul Nicholls has won the Challow Hurdle for the last four seasons.
Paul Nicholls Challow Hurdle Wins
- Cornish Rebel (2003)
- Denman (2006)
- Bravemansgame (2020)
- Stage Star (2021)
- Hermes Allen (2022)
- Captain Teague (2023)
Trainer Jonjo O’Neill Has Won The Challow Hurdle Three Times
Much of the focus ahead of Newbury’s Grade One will be on the top two in the market – The New Lion and Regent’s Stroll.
However, the Jonjo O’Neill runner Bill Joyce will certainly have his backers too, after impressing this season over hurdles at Carlisle and Sandown – the last a Grade Two win in the Winter Novices’ Hurdle.
He’s likely to be the third best in the market with the best betting sites in the UK, behind the main two, but with Jonjo having a top record in this race too – he certainly looks the value.
O’Neill won the Challow in the past with Wichita Lineman, Backspin and Taquin du Seuil.
