The threat from a bushfire burning near the town of Gawler and Adelaide's northern fringes has reduced, but the Country Fire Service (CFS) is continuing to battle the blaze which has burned through hay and stubble.
An emergency warning was earlier issued for the fire at Kangaroo Flat which broke out this morning near a major highway, and has travelled in a southerly direction towards Ward Belt and Gawler.
The blaze has burned in stubble and hay near Redbanks Road, which is closed, not far from the Northern Expressway.
The CFS has halted the forward rate of spread the fire, six kilometres north-west of Gawler.
The CFS earlier said the the fire was a threat to lives and properties, and has since reduced its emergency warning to an advice message, but is still urging caution.
"This fire is causing smoke to drift in the direction of kangaroo flat, Ward Belt and Gawler townships which includes the Northern Expressway area," the CFS said.
"You are advised to close all doors and windows and stay indoors if the smoke is causing you concern. Be careful when driving as smoke may reduce visibility."
Six aircraft and 21 CFS crews are battling the blaze, along with farm fighting units.
South Australia has been sweltering through a heatwave and the CFS warned today would bring difficult and dangerous conditions.
Temperatures in the Gawler region have already climbed above 38 degrees Celsius.
Fire weather warnings and total fire bans are in place for eight of the state's districts.
The fire danger has been rated as extreme in the Eastern Eyre Peninsula, Lower Eyre Peninsula, Flinders, Mid North, Mount Lofty Ranges, Yorke Peninsula, Upper South East and Lower South East districts.
