Employees at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau were informed on Sunday that the agency's headquarters building in Washington, DC, will be closed for the entire week. In an email sent by the CFPB's chief operating officer, all employees and contractors were instructed to work remotely unless directed otherwise by the Acting Director or his designee. The reason for the sudden closure was not provided, and the CFPB did not respond to requests for comment.
The email stated, 'The DC Headquarters Building will be closed this week (2/10-2/14).' This decision follows a tweet by Elon Musk that read, 'CFPB RIP' accompanied by a tombstone emoji. Musk's Department of Government Efficiency subsequently deleted the CFPB's X account on Friday, after Russell Vought assumed the role of acting director at the Office of Management and Budget.
Vought then issued an email on Saturday instructing all CFPB employees to cease nearly all work activities, including efforts to combat financial abuse. The sudden closure of the CFPB headquarters has left employees and observers puzzled, as no official explanation has been provided for the decision.
