Cessna crashes into hilly bushland west of Brisbane, three people dead

Three people have died in a light plane crash in the Somerset region, west of Brisbane, police confirmed on Monday night.

The aircraft came down in dense bushland near Fernvale on Monday afternoon.

"Preliminary information indicates the aircraft departed Dalby at 10am and was due to land at Archerfield [airport in Brisbane] at 2pm," Queensland police said in a statement.

The alarm was raised around 2:40pm when the plane did not arrive at Archerfield.

Multiple emergency crews were called to the incident.

"The aircraft was located during an aerial search and all three occupants were pronounced deceased at the scene," police said.

In a statement, an Australian Transport Safety Bureau spokesperson said it has launched an investigation into the accident involving a Cessna light aircraft that crashed near Lake Wivenhoe.

The spokesperson said a team of transport safety investigators would be deployed from Brisbane on Tuesday.
