Cesar Azpilicueta reveals the crucial tactic pivotal to Chelsea clinching the Club World Cup

Chelsea clinched the FIFA Club World Cup after beating Palmeiras 2-1 after extra time on Saturday evening.

The Blues took the lead in the 55th minute courtesy of Romelu Lukaku, with Callum Hudson Odoi delivering an inch-perfect cross for the Belgium international to latch onto and power a header home.

However, it didn't take Palmeiras long to level the scoreline as Thiago Silva was penalised for a handball in the 62nd minute, with Raphael Veiga converting the spot-kick.

Chelsea created plenty of chances to win the game but extra time was forced, adding to the anxiety amongst the global Chelsea fan base.

Thomas Tuchel's men continued to push for a winner and in the 117th minute their efforts were rewarded as the Londoners were handed a penalty following another handball incident.

Champions League hero Kai Havertz stepped up and didn't disappoint, with the German's successful spot-kick proving to be the difference on the night.

Interestingly, though, there seemed to be clever tactics from captain Cesar Azpilicueta before Havertz did dispatch the penalty.

The Spaniard held onto the ball for a lengthy amount of time and essentially made Palmeiras think that he was going to take the penalty, absorbed all their attempts to delay and just before the referee signalled for the spot-kick to be taken, he gave it to Havertz.

Havertz then made no mistake from 12 yards.

Interestingly, Azpilicueta - after the game finished - confirmed that it was in fact a tactic because he "knew what they were like" and wanted to take some of the pressure off Havertz.

Chelsea fans will certainly be delighted with how the 32-year-old handled the pressure situation and yet again demonstrated brilliant leadership.
