With long and off-putting waiting times for NCT dates in Ireland, some motorists are getting lucky with a free test through a lesser-known method, however it does not work for everyone.
The NCT car safety test is compulsory for all cars in the country to ensure that they are roadworthy, with the age of a vehicle a determining factor in how often one must take the test.
Reports in the media have highlighted that many motorists are unable to secure a test date until early next year, despite their NCT date coming up this year.

However, there is a rule that if you are a driver who has been waiting for an extended period to get their vehicle tested, you may be able to avail of the test free of charge.
According to the NCT standards of customer service, the programme "aims to ensure that the average lead time for an appointment at an individual NCT centre is less than or equal to 15 days".
In instances where a motorist has been left waiting for an appointment for over 28 days, they can possibly get their NCT for free.
There are a number of caveats. A spokesperson said those waiting for an NCT for over four weeks can't get the test free of charge if:
- The test is overdue by more than seven days at the time of contacting us;
- An appointment was offered seven days or more prior to the test due date;
- You have made specific requests regarding suitable days, times or dates;
- You have declined or rearranged two or more appointments;
- You have failed to attend an appointment
- You have previously accepted or requested an appointment outside of the 28-day period."
Drivers are being asked to read up on information that states that the NCT has undergone a few changes.
Beginning on Friday, May 20, three new things are to be tested on cars as part of the compulsory NCT, such as checking if new vehicles have E-Call working in the car. Everything you need to know about the new changes is here.
